Guidelines for Authors

Lat Am J Clin Sci Med Technol is a peer-reviewed, bilingual journal addressed to scholars from biomedicine, clinical investigators, doctors, toxicologists, biologists, pharmacologists, pharmacists, and healthcare providers. Likewise, it is a regional platform for international diffusion, Open Access, and continuous publication that gathers investigations and global topics. Our Editorial Board follows the recommendations from the Council of Science Editors (https://www.councilscienceeditors.org/recommendations-for-promoting-integrity-in-scientific-journal-publications)

Manuscript Types

Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology (Lat Am J Clin Sci Med Technol) accepts the following manuscript types:

1. Original Article. An informative report of the results on the testing of one or more hypotheses detailing the methodology followed for this purpose. Its length is up to 5,000 words, excluding bibliographic references, figure captions, tables, graphics, photographs, or diagrams. The graphic elements, such as tables (row and column tabulation), charts (single-column lists), or figures (graphics, photographs, diagrams) should not exceed seven. This type of manuscript should include a structured abstract (Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Conclusions) up to 350 words, as well as a Resumen (Introducción, Material y métodos, Resultados, Conclusiones), which is the abstract translation. Both the Abstract and Resumen should be accompanied by up to six keywords. There is no limit on the number of bibliographic references, but authors are urged to use only the strictly necessary ones. There is also no limit on the number of authors. However, in cases where the Editorial Board of Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology considers appropriate, justification may be sought for each co-author's contribution to the development of the study. Preferably, the introduction should include direct background, justification, hypothesis, and the objective(s) of the study. The results should be presented in a logical sequence and include the relevant tables or figures. The discussion should interpret the data and articulate the potential implications of the results; thus, it should summarize the main findings and possible outcomes, without restating figures or metrics. This type of paper is subject to external peer review.
2. Case Reports. Real cases that have not been published. They contain unique features of a particular disease or the patient’s reaction; thus, they significantly contribute to medical knowledge. Its length is up to 4,000 words, excluding bibliographic references, figure captions, tables, graphics, photographs, or diagrams. The graphic elements, such as tables (row and column tabulation), charts (single-column lists), or figures (graphics, photographs, diagrams) should not exceed four. This type of manuscript should include a structured abstract (Introduction, Case Report/Case Series, Conclusions) up to 350 words, as well as a Resumen (Introducción, Caso clínico/Series de casos, Conclusiones), which is the abstract translation. Both the Abstract and Resumen should be accompanied by up to six keywords. The maximum number of bibliographic references is 15 for a case report (or case series); there is no limit if the case contains a review of the subject. It is not recommended that the number of authors exceed ten; however, justified exceptional cases may be presented to the Editorial Board of Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology for consideration. The report cases should be related to unreported or unusual side effects, undocumented drug interactions, variations in the natural history of the disease, rare clinical manifestations, the diagnosis and treatment of new emerging diseases, unexpected associations between diseases and symptoms, or findings that provide a new aspect of pathogenesis. Likewise, they may explain potential risk factors and propose new hypotheses and theories that could inform the development of therapies, procedures, or diagnostic techniques, among other applications. All relevant data of the case should be presented, including demographic information of interest (the patient’s identity must be kept), complete clinical record, laboratory and cabinet tests, treatments or interventions, and the results. This type of paper is subject to external peer review.
3. Narrative Review. A critical analysis and updating of a scientific subject that identifies problems or controversial topics and suggests solutions. This type of paper is received by explicit invitation from the Editorial Board of Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology. Still, high-quality narrative reviews written by experts may be received and published without invitation. The selection of literature in a narrative review is at the authors' discretion and based on the academic objectives established in the paper. There is no limit on the number of bibliographic references, but authors are urged to use only the strictly necessary ones. There is no limit on the number of authors, but it should not exceed five; however, exceptional cases, properly justified, may be submitted to the Editorial Board of Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology. Its length is up to 5,000 words, excluding bibliographic references, figure captions, tables, graphics, photographs, or diagrams. The graphic elements, such as tables (row and column tabulation), charts (single-column lists), or figures (graphics, photographs, diagrams) should not exceed seven. This type of manuscript should include a structured abstract (Introduction, Development, Conclusions) up to 350 words, as well as a Resumen (Introducción, Desarrollo, Conclusiones), which is the abstract translation. Both the Abstract and Resumen should be accompanied by up to six keywords. The introduction should include the justification for the development of the subject and the objective(s) of the study. The authors may name and structure the development into sections and subsections as the topic requires. In the conclusions, the main contribution or scope of the narrative review should be summarized. This type of paper is subject to external peer review.
4. Systematic Review. Documentary research about the scientific literature in which the analysis of publications is carried out with methodological criteria that limit bias in the selection of scientific texts, and aims to answer specific research questions or solve possible disputes in the clinical or scientific field. Beyond updating a general subject, a systematic review aims to draw conclusions based on the critical analysis of the literature, the relative contributions, and the quality of each selected article in order to reach informed and critical conclusions. A systematic review may or may not include a meta-analysis. Still, it aims to summarize the best available evidence, enabling a conclusion regarding the problem that is free of opinion, personal or emotional bias, and other biases. Its length is up to 5,000 words, excluding bibliographic references, figure captions, tables, graphics, photographs, or diagrams. The graphic elements, such as tables (row and column tabulation), charts (single-column lists), or figures (graphics, photographs, diagrams) should not exceed seven. This type of manuscript should include a structured abstract (Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Conclusions) up to 350 words, as well as a Resumen (Introducción, Material y métodos, Resultados, Conclusiones), which is the abstract translation. Both the Abstract and Resumen should be accompanied by up to six keywords. There is no limit on the number of bibliographic references, but authors are urged to use only the strictly necessary ones. There is also no limit on the number of authors for this type of paper. Preferably, the introduction should include direct background, justification of the development of the subject, and the objective(s). The methodology should explain the bibliographic research process, the references consulted, the literature selection criteria (inclusion and exclusion), the procedures for evaluating the quality of the literature (where relevant), and the summary and decision-making related to the answer(s) to the investigation question(s). The results should present the number and nature of the consulted sources, a flowchart of the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the literature, as well as a summary of the published evidence. This type of paper is subject to external peer review.
5. Letter to the Editor. A brief description of a proposal for the scientific community or a question for Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology. The letter will always be addressed to the Editor; it should begin with “To the Editor”. A letter to the Editor does not have an Abstract or Resumen. These letters may also be used to present brief communications on scientific findings or case reports whose length does not warrant the full development of other manuscript types. The graphic elements, such as tables (row and column tabulation), charts (single-column lists), or figures (graphics, photographs, diagrams) should not exceed two. Its length is up to 500 words, or up to 1,000 if the letter communicates scientific or clinical findings. The maximum number of references is 15. There is a limit of five authors, but letters to the Editor that report findings from a brief investigation may have 15 authors. This type of paper may (or may not) be subject to external peer review, depending on the content and the consideration of the Editorial Board of Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology.
6. Editorial. In this type of paper, one or more experts will give their opinion about topics of interest. These contributions are received upon explicit invitation from the Editorial Board of Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology; however, outstanding editorials prepared by experts may be submitted and published without invitation. An editorial does not include an Abstract or Resumen. Its length is up to 1000 words. The graphic elements, such as tables (row and column tabulation), charts (single-column lists), or figures (graphics, photographs, diagrams) should not exceed two. The maximum number of references is 15. There is a limit of three authors. This type of contribution is reviewed and evaluated by the Editorial Board of Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology. It is not subject to external peer review.
7. Special Article. This document presents several reports of scientific reunions, abstracts of congresses brief works, position statements, consensus, in extenso academic reports, clinical practice guidelines, experts' recommendations, among other texts. The manuscript should be submitted upon the invitation of the Editorial Board of Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology. There is no limit on the number of bibliographic references, but authors are urged to use only the strictly necessary ones. There is also no limit on the number of authors; however, the Editorial Board of Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology may require justification for the number of authors, based on the extent of their contributions to the development of the text. Its length is up to 5000 words excluding bibliographic references, figure captions, tables, graphics, photographs, or diagrams. The graphic elements, such as tables (row-and-column tabulation), charts (single-column lists), or figures (graphics, photographs, diagrams) should not exceed ten. This type of manuscript should include a structured abstract (Introduction, Materials and Methods, Development, Conclusions) of up to 350 words, as well as a Resumen (Introducción, Material y métodos, Desarrollo, Conclusiones), which is the abstract translation. Both the Abstract and Resumen should be accompanied by up to six keywords. The introduction should include the justification for the development of the subject and the objective(s) of the study. The methodology for developing this contribution should be explained, as should the bibliographic search and the references consulted. This type of paper may or may not be subject to external peer review, according to the content of the document and the view of the Editorial Board of Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology.
8. Perspective. This type of manuscript addresses relevant healthcare topics, provides the basis for a professional, more detailed analysis, and, from an expert’s perspective, offers an overview of the area covered by the topics. These contributions are received upon explicit invitation from the Editorial Board of Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology; however, outstanding contributions will be considered and published without invitation. The selection of the literature is at the authors’ discretion. There is no limit on the number of bibliographic references, but authors are urged to use only the strictly necessary ones. It is recommended that the number of authors not exceed five; however, in exceptional cases, additional authors may be included and justified to the Editorial Board of Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology for consideration. Its length is up to 8,000 words excluding bibliographic references, figure captions, tables, graphics, photographs, or diagrams. The graphic elements, such as tables (row and column tabulation), charts (single-column lists), or figures (graphics, photographs, diagrams) should not exceed seven. This type of manuscript should include a structured abstract (Introduction, Development, Conclusions) up to 350 words, as well as a Resumen (Introducción, Desarrollo, Conclusiones), which is the abstract translation. Both the Abstract and Resumen should be accompanied by up to six keywords. In the Development, the authors may name the sections and divide them into subsections as the topic requires. This type of contribution is subject to peer review.

Once you have signed up, select the manuscript type your article belongs to and start uploading documents as indicated. Please remove any data from the primary author, co-authors, and corresponding author.

Article Structure

• Title page including
  • Title
  • Running title (no more than 40 characters, including spaces)
• Authors’ names and affiliations
• Corresponding author’s data (name, address, email, and telephone number). The corresponding author is responsible for informing the coauthors of revisions, text modifications, and approvals to the galley proofs.
• Abstract
• Keywords. They should be MeSH terms and relevant descriptors of the topic developed in the manuscript.
• Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Discussion may be included or vary according to the manuscript type. Please review the specifications above for each manuscript type.
• Conflict of Interest Statement. All authors must declare any possible conflicts of interest which might be inadequately reflected in the author’s manuscript; any financial or other relationship with commercial entities whose products or services are related to the main subject of the manuscript or to socio-political issues which could cause conflicts. Examples of potential conflicts of interest include employment, consultancies, ownership of shares, fees, payments for expert testimony, patent applications/registrations, and subsidies or other sources of funding.
• References. References cited in the text should follow the Vancouver style (Vancouver Citation Style Guide (2026): Complete Reference Format Guide) and be superscript with an Arabic numeral. If the reference has more than 6 authors or fewer, all must be included; if it has seven or more, "et al." should be added after the sixth author. The journal's abbreviation should be as set out in Index Medicus. Quotations should be clearly identified and quoted (and their origin in brackets) to avoid being considered plagiarism.
• Graphics (tables, graphs, charts, photographs, and illustrations). If the photograph, or chart, is composed of two images (or more), compile the series into a single JPEG or TIFF file. Tables must be loaded separately into MS Word (.docx) files, in the corresponding cells. Color images must be high quality (300 dpi or larger, or 5-6 inches [12 cm]) in JPG or TIF format. Footer/image should be included. If authors wish to include previously published text, tables, graphs, photographs, diagrams, etc., they should do so in accordance with the options displayed during the Copyright file upload.
• Acknowledgements. You may explicitly thank whoever contributed to the implementation of the study. Any sources of funding applicable to the study should be declared.

Cover Letter

The cover letter should state that the manuscript has not been published elsewhere and that all authors have reviewed it and agree with its content. You can find a sample cover letter in the process of submitting your manuscript.

Peer Review

Once the Editorial Board of Lat Am J Clin Sci Med Technol has accepted the manuscript for review, it will be sent to two independent reviewers. Lat Am J Clin Sci Med Technol uses a double-blind peer-review system (neither reviewers nor authors know each other's identities). Reviewers may accept or reject the manuscript review request. Once they agree to review the text, they will send their decision and comments within 21 working days. If the opinions do not coincide, the Editor will send the article for rapid review by a third expert, whose decision will be final. The opinion is delivered to the author by email. Based on reviewers' comments, the Editor-in-Chief will determine whether or not the article is accepted.

Copyrights

All copyrights of published manuscripts will be the permanent property of Lat Am J Clin Sci Med Technol. When the manuscript is accepted, Lat Am J Clin Sci Med Technol will send the authors a "Letter of Assignment of Rights" authorizing the publisher the copy of the publication, along with the request to review the galleys of their article. In the above letter, the authors confirm that the manuscript contains no material that may infringe copyright upon publication. For special articles (see the description of article types), a non-assignment letter will be requested, under which authors retain their copyrights. This will ensure the maximum possible protection and dissemination of information under copyright laws.

Ethics for Publication

Plagiarism. Policies on similarity and plagiarism in Lat Am J Clin Sci Med Technol aim to ensure the originality and authenticity of papers submitted to the journal. That protects authors' creations and provides certainty regarding the veracity and reliability of the information. Thus, the procedures followed in the Lat Am J Clin Sci Med Technol focus on rejecting plagiarism (including self-plagiarism), unauthorized copying, and copyright infringement.

Any author who submits their work to Lat Am J Clin Sci Med Technol for evaluation and potential publication must accept the following policies and processes:

• The cover letter must include a statement that the work or manuscript submitted to the journal has not been generated with information (texts and/or graphic elements) taken partially or entirely from other publications, that copyright has not been infringed, that the information presented in the article has not been used improperly or unlawfully. Authors must declare the artificial intelligence (AI) use in generating images, some procedural, compilation or statistical analysis methodologies, provided that their use is correctly stated in the manuscript.
• Lat Am J Clin Sci Med Technol will use dedicated software for the verification and screening of the texts received to identify the undeclared and/or unauthorized use of similarity percentages and detection of possible plagiarism. A similarity percentage of 20% or more, detectable through the journal's dedicated technologies, will indicate suspicion of plagiarism/self-plagiarism and will be returned to the authors for clarification and adjustment, if required and agreed. The text segments subject to such scrutiny are the title, Abstract/Resumen, and body of the text from the introduction to the conclusions, as well as statements from funding sources and acknowledgements. Authors' names, affiliations, keywords, conflict of interest declarations, and the list of references are excluded from scrutiny.
• Lat Am J Clin Sci Med Technol reserves the right to change the technologies used in the detection of plagiarism and unauthorized or undeclared use of AI, to adjust the detection thresholds with which an article will be judged, the convening of persons who can help to pronounce on the incurrence in a potential fault, as well as changing the processes that are deemed appropriate for achieving these ends.
• If, during the post-publication period, an article already published in the journal is identified by readers and/or the scientific community as one with partial or total content that violates these provisions, it may be re-evaluated using anti-plagiarism technology. If required, the editorial board will investigate and give an opinion on the occurrence of any fault, with the potential consequences of:
  1. Publication of clarifications;
  2. Partial retraction; or
  3. Total retraction of an article.
• Lat Am J Clin Sci Med Technol reserves the right of veto for authors who, due to their importance, magnitude, or recurrence of violations of the above provisions, are considered unreliable according to current ethical standards.
• Lat Am J Clin Sci Med Technol Editorial Board will always be willing to listen to the defense and arguments of the authors and readers on the material sent for evaluation or published in the journal, in accordance with the above provisions.

Investigation in Humans. Authors should follow the Declaration of Helsinki for human research. For studies involving human participants, authors must explicitly declare in the Methods section that informed consent was obtained from all participants (or their legal guardians, in the case of minors or individuals unable to provide consent) prior to their inclusion in the study.

Furthermore, authors are required to retain all supporting patient data, consent documentation, and ethics committee approvals, and must make these available to the Lat Am J Clin Sci Med Technol Editorial Board upon request during the review process or after publication, should verification be necessary. Failure to provide such documentation when requested may result in rejection or retraction of the manuscript.

The anonymity of patients must be respected (confidential information will not be published). If it is essential to identify information, the authors must obtain the patient's informed consent to publish material that could identify them, including photographs.

All research involving human participants must have been approved by an institutional review board (IRB) or research ethics committee prior to initiation, in accordance with the ethical principles set forth in the Declaration of Helsinki. Authors must state the name of the approving committee, the approval/protocol number, and the date of approval in the Methods section of the manuscript. Studies lacking documented ethics committee approval will not be considered for publication.

Investigation in animals. The authors must establish that the use of animals complies with animal-use principles and relevant institutional policies.

Publication of an Article

If an article is accepted for publication, Lat Am J Clin Sci Med Technol will send the galley proofs to the corresponding author for review and approval before publication. Any mistake found after publication will be reported to the Editorial Office for publication of an erratum.
