Es con gran satisfacción y orgullo que nuestra revista Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology llega, en este 2023, a cinco años de publicación continua. Cinco años de ser un foro para los científicos y profesionales de la salud de América Latina, y en beneficio de los pacientes. Han sido cinco accidentados años, pues nadie imaginó cuando lanzamos la revista en 2019, que íbamos a ser testigos de la pandemia de COVID-19. Pero hemos sorteado con éxito este evento catastrófico a nivel mundial. Nuestra revista ha continuado ejecutando su misión sin hacer una pausa.
El interés fundamental de Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology es publicar la investigación que se realiza en nuestra región, cuyos resultados son relevantes no sólo para otros investigadores y profesionales de la salud, sino también para los pacientes localizados en América Latina. Ello es primordial porque Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology no pretende competir con otras revistas internacionales en el área biomédica. Su vocación es ser un órgano latinoamericano para latinoamericanos.
Uno de los objetivos centrales de nuestra revista es contribuir a optimizar la práctica de las ciencias de la salud en América Latina. Es bien sabido que existen diferencias fisiológicas y farmacológicas entre poblaciones, que obedecen a diversos factores, incluidos los genéticos y nutricionales. Por lo tanto, los efectos de los medicamentos en una población no pueden extrapolarse a otras de manera automática. Por ejemplo, el perfil de reacciones adversas de ciertos medicamentos difiere entre sujetos caucásicos europeos y mestizos mexicanos, por lo que en ocasiones se requieren ajustes en la dosificación. Ante esta realidad, dos disciplinas adquieren gran importancia, la Farmacogenómica y la Farmacovigilancia. Por esta razón, Latin American Journal of Clinical Science and Medical Technology se enorgullece de haber establecido una relación estrecha con la Sociedad Latinoamericana de Farmacogenómica y Medicina Personalizada (SOLFAGEM) y con la Asociación Mexicana de Farmacovigilancia, A.C., que también tiene vínculos muy estrechos con sus pares latinoamericanos.
Es menester mencionar, además, que un porcentaje considerable de nuestras publicaciones en estos cinco años se ha destinado a Oncoguías, redactadas por expertos del Instituto Nacional de Cancerología de México y de otras prestigiosas instituciones hospitalarias latinoamericanas. En ellas se aborda una amplia variedad de temas relacionados con el cáncer, por lo que son de invaluable trascendencia práctica. Cabe señalar que, aunque existen numerosas guías internacionales acerca del manejo del cáncer, la mayoría está dirigida a profesionales de la salud de los países del llamado «primer mundo», donde la práctica clínica y, sobre todo, la disponibilidad de recursos es muy diferente a lo que sucede en América Latina. El gran valor de las Oncoguías publicadas en Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology es que están redactadas pensando en la situación que se vive en nuestra región.
Otro tema del que se ha ocupado Latin American Journal of Clinical Sciences and Medical Technology es la investigación de los venenos de animales, tema primordial en la realidad de América Latina, pero que no suele ser de interés para las revistas médicas y científicas que no se centran en Latinoamérica. De esta manera, cubrimos un aspecto vital para nuestra región, pero que no había recibido la suficiente atención en el pasado.
Por supuesto, nuestra revista también ha publicado artículos de investigación original y de revisión sobre diversos temas de investigación básica y clínica, siempre teniendo en mente el contexto latinoamericano. Una novedad de la que también nos sentimos orgullosos es que, si bien representamos un foro de investigación médica y biomédica, también estamos abiertos a las opiniones de los pacientes de América Latina, cuyas voces deben ser escuchadas con la mayor atención posible.
Por lo tanto, celebramos nuestros primeros cinco años de publicación continua y estamos muy optimistas sobre lo que vendrá en los años por venir.
